You must first know if you want to take the cable car (ticket Aeri version) to the Monastery after your train ride from Barcelona, or if you prefer to take the Funicular Cremallera to get there ( ticket Cremallera version). To be clear, the train takes you from the station Espanya at the foot of the mountain of Montserrat, where you have two options, Cable or rack railways, to climb to the Monastery. You'll also see below that it will take off at different stops depending on whether you choose one or the other of these options.

When you buy your tickets at the station for you rebdre Espanya to Montserrat you must make sure you buy the right kind of ticket. There are two versions for each ticket listed in the table below. There is a ticket to enter the monastery by Cable (AERI) and another to access the rack railways. Even if the tickets listed below have the same name and are identical rate it however, two versions exist and you must specify that you want when purchased at the station. They are not interchangeable and no exchange will be possible once the ticket purchased.

For example, the "Trans Montserrat ticket" you will be asked if you want version Téliphérique or rack railways. The price is identical and the name of the ticket is also what can make some puzzled tourists.

Cremallera Funicular - Train Rack
If you are not comfortable in the cable car you can choose to take the cog train instead. To take the cog train you need to get off one stop after Aeri de Montserrat, stopping Monistrol. The rack railway takes about 15 minutes to arrive at the Monastery and is more comfortable than the cable but the picture is less enchanting. The other advantage of rack railways is being able to sit during the journey, and it is what is more accessible to wheelchair ros.
I recommend that you arrive well in advance to Espanya station because there are often long queues to buy tickets and trains to Montserrat leave on time.
